Mayari Memos: Campus Safety and Reminders

Sunday, October 6th, 2024

Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroonan.
One who does not look back at her or his past will not reach her or his destination.

Happy Sunday! As the weather gets colder and we feel like we’re all getting older, we’re glad to go into another month with you all. We’re nearing Thanksgiving break, so let’s all keep pushing through! Here are some announcements and updates for all of you:

Campus Safety and Resources

Following the safety threats surrounding campus this past Thursday and cancellation of our last GBM, we want to remind all of you to take care of yourselves and keep yourselves safe. Remember that you are your first priority and your well-being comes before anything else — take as much time as you need to process emotions and experiences, and reach out to your loved ones.

Here are some free and easily accessible resources across campus, ranging from counseling services to physical safe spaces at SDSU.

Counseling and Psychological Services (P.S: You don’t need a reason to speak with a counselor or therapist; break the stigma behind speaking with therapists and utilize this resource on our campus.)
Associated Students Food Pantry
SDSU Cultural Centers (The APIDA Center is a great place to learn about other cultures, as well as spend some downtime while you’re on campus.)
Commuter Resource Center
Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT) (One of the most helpful resources is the Basic Needs Kit Request Form, where you can request for free necessities such as toiletries, school supplies, and more.)
On-Campus Locations with Free Menstrual Products

Our Student Advisors, Hailey and Annie, are also here as a resource within Samahan. If you would like to schedule a meeting to chat with one/both of them about anything, send them an email ([email protected]) or message them on Instagram.
As an executive board, we are always here to support you both inside and outside of Samahan spaces and invite you to reach out to us whenever you find it appropriate. Mahal na mahal kita. <3

51st High School Conference is On The Horizon!

WHO’S READY FOR OUR 51ST HSC?! We know we are!
Every year, AB Samahan hosts an annual conference for high school students within San Diego and Riverside County, inviting them to visit SDSU and gain insight into what higher education can look like. Participants also take part in a variety of workshops (i.e; barbering, fixing your car, dancing, traditional craft making, medical skills, and much more) and even end the day off with a talent show!
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS (ALL OF YOU) FOR THE DAY OF! This event is not possible without your help and mentorship throughout the day. More information will be sent out regarding volunteer signups in the next few weeks, so please keep an eye out on our Instagram for more details.

Auxiliary Board Updates and Meetings

Thank you to those of you who have been coming out to our auxiliary board meetings over the past few weeks. We appreciate your dedication beyond attending GBMs and FG practices and are looking forward to growing more with you all!

ABLE and Media Team meetings are alternating Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 PM in AH 2116 throughout this semester (see @samahanable and @samahanmediateam for further updates). Catalyst Dance Team has workshop and performance opportunities throughout the year, so be on the lookout for more information. Stay tuned for reports from our SOAR Board and CAP Board in the upcoming weeks as well!

Shoutout to all of y’all attending meetings and shadowing Mayari Board in ABLE!

GO VOTE!

Don’t forget that Election Day is this Tuesday, November 5th. We encourage all of you to take the time to make an informed vote; research on the candidates and propositions for this year’s election and encourage your peers to do the same. Some helpful resources include nonpartisan voting guides and information about voting locations on campus in the next few days.

If you have any announcements from external organizations you’d like to share, please upload it to the form below; we love to showcase and connect everyone to members of the community.
Make sure to share any photos you take to our new Google Photos album for the year as well!
